We asked Deborah to tell us a little more about herself, and this is what she had to say!

When did you start scrapbooking?

I started scrapbooking while pregnant with my little boy, Steven. I wanted to keep my Dh caught up on the pregnancy since he was deployed in the Navy after 9/11. I left my Dh in Japan when I was 20 weeks pregnant and he came home 2 weeks before I gave birth. The time passed by so much more quickly when I had something to occupy my time with. I started scrapping at a LSS in Athens, GA. It was a great way to meet new friends in a new town. I was scrapping in 8 ½ x 11, but quickly changed to 12 x 12 because I could add more pictures. I loved all the little embellishments. I also was very into paper piecing and making my scrap dollars stretch by making most of my own extras. I would make a paper piecing for a fellow scrapper at the crop and it would pay for my night out.

Why did you start scrapbooking?

I started scrapbooking so that my children would know me better. They will always remember our family fun and closeness of their childhood. I have Fibromyalgia and a lot of days the disease has the upper hand, but I use scrapbooking as pain control. I can design and enjoy my memories even when the worst pain days are happening. I know that my memories are important to get me through to that next good day.

Who/what is/are your biggest scrapbooking inspirations?

My biggest inspirations have been Becky Higgins for her wonderful sketches. I also subscribe to Memory Makers, Scrapbooks etc and Simple Scrapbooks. I can always find a LO to scraplift, or a new idea I want to try out. However, the most important inspiration is my militaryscrappersparadise Yahoo group. These women find the joy of our families, the military way of life and our spouses that serve. They always create works of art that get us through deployments, long lines at the commissary, moving yet again to a new town or country or trying to make the pay stretch to that next payday fun and full of laughter. Their Lo’s can always inspire me to try something new. Since our lives are spent a lot in transition, scrapping the high points is almost a patriotic duty for me. I want my grandchildren and their grandchildren to know what sacrifices we made and how my Dh served in the Navy. Military life is always an adventure! I am also inspired by the artists on Scrappers daily dose. The designers’ styles are so different, from cutting edge to simply perfect. Just glancing through the gallery will always jump start your creativity.

What has/have been your greatest LO's/achievements through scrapbooking?

I was “published” online by club scrap for the Friendship kit. But my most important achievement is scrapping my babies first years, our homeschool adventures with the 11 year old and my Dh’s Navy album. I am currently taking pictures for my Dh’s Chief initiation album. (I already bought the K and Co. Navy album for this important event.)

How do your family/friends react to your layouts? Are they supportive of your hobby?

My Mom is my sugar momma and my blank check. She buys me supplies continually so that our albums look just right. She is like a kid in a candy store at the LSS. I have to remind her that 5 dollars for something adds up quick. She also pays for my club scrap and club stamp addiction to the GHM department. She always says the right thing when I show her a new LO. My Dh kinda grunts and goes that’s nice. But, my mom understands the work I put in and the love that goes into every picture and design. Steven, 2 ½, loves to look at his pictures and identify his family, especially our cats. This week, he started taking his first pics with the digital camera. Thomas, 11, laughs at the Lo’s of our camping trips and feels proud of his school achievements. He has pride in the memories that these Lo’s capture. I am seeing my children grow up right before my eyes, my Lo’s reminds me of the many changes they go through and how fast they really do grow up.

How does scrapbooking fit into your life? Do you scrap more in the morning, afternoon, or night?

I mostly scrapbook as pain control. Pain is worse for me in the evening from the Fibromyalgia. I have recently started a Yahoo group for Fibro scrappers http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fibroscrappers/ As scrappers, Fibromyalgia shapes our lives and our styles of scrapbooking. We tend to be very prolific scrappers since scrapping takes our mind off of what are bodies limitations might be. I hope this yahoo group will inspire other scrappers with disabilities to scrapbook how our lives really are. Some days, I am in a wheelchair and use a cane. I don’t want to hide these things in my photos because they are a part of me. I want to tell the real story of our lives and not a rose tinted view. I want to show the skinned up nose, the pulled teeth chipmunk face, my baby pushing my wheelchair and swaying/dancing in my Dh’s lap at a formal ball and saying goodbyes the next time we move on the navy’s timetable. Everynight, I try to add something to my scrapbooking, either sketching out a new LO, making page kits, or working on a new LO or Technique. I also love reading my scrapmags in between homeschooling my 11 year old and beginning preschool with the 2 ½ year old. Is there anything in life besides scrapbooking? Every moment can be a new LO. My digital camera is never very far from my side.

What do you like to communicate through your layouts?

Our family is extremely close. It is a very small family, Mom, Dad, two brothers and grandma all under the same roof, but we have rich traditions and funny jokes. I want to communicate the milestones in our lives but also our unique personalities. We are a family of individualists.

What are your favorite product lines?

My favorite lines are Club Scrap and Club Stamp. Their rich textures and kits can make any pictures look good. I also love Chatterbox, MM and SEI. I love patterend paper and have trouble not picking up every sheet in my LSS. What LO isn’t complete without some metal on it?

How do you get started on a layout? (ie pictures, embellishments, paper, what do you do first, second, etc.)

I will put photos together first into LO’s usually 4 to 5 pics and then match them with paper. The embellishments are last after I have a sketch made out. I rarely do a LO that I haven’t sketched out before hand. My Lo’s tend to be about everyday life, so bright colors match my son’s great stores of energies and keeping the Lo’s simple allows me to get more done in less time. Club Scrap always makes me think outside of my box and comfort zone!

What else would you like the SDD's to know about you?
